• On the 26 February 2004 the Island was devastated by
Cyclone Ivy
• The Cyclone destroyed homes, Community buildings and a
kindergarten, and greatly damaged schools, clinics, and a church
• The Islands Copra crop was also ruined. The Copra is not only the
Paama's main revenue, it is also their traditional roofing material.
Until this crop re-establishes itself naturally, the Paama Islanders
cannot make money to rebuild or replace their homes. Banana
trees and Kava were also decimated.
• 95% of Water storage facilities were damaged
In the nine months since Cyclone Ivy hit Paama, Government aid has been directed at restoring the minimum health standards and has been insufficient in restoring accomodations and facilities. Donations from The Red Cross, Australian and New Zealand Governments has been distributed mostly to other parts of Vanuatu and Paama has been unable to rebuild itself.
